Astypalea Palace
At the top of the town, this smart boutique hotel provides magnificent views over the old town of Hora and the sea. It is a 3-minute walk from the windmills and square which mark the entrance to Hora, where you will find the nearest taverna, and a 7-8 minute walk via the stepped lanes down to the harbour (steep in parts).
There are just nine spacious deluxe studios and suites here. All were fully remodelled in 2016 in a minimalist modern Cycladic style, each with a double bed, fridge, flat-screen TV, air conditioning, free WiFi, shower room, hairdryer, coffee maker and private front sun terrace or balcony boasting wonderful views to the old town, sea and off-shore islets. Suites have an open-plan living area (some are split-level with a sleeping gallery above the living room area) and most have an indoor or outdoor (heated) jacuzzi. There is one Junior Pool Suite with a private pool.
Downstairs there is reception, a breakfast room, furnished sun terrace. Car hire is recommended, although the bus stop for the harbour and Livadia beach is only 300m distant. Due to the location and steps we would not recommend a stay here to anyone with mobility problems.
Astypalea, Greece
Astypalea, a mesmerising blend of the Cycladic and Dodecanese styles, emerges from the cerulean waters of the Aegean like a dream. Often referred to as the “Butterfly of the Aegean” due to its unique shape, the island enchants visitors with its pristine beaches, charming villages, and a sense of timelessness. Dominated by the imposing presence of the Venetian castle crowning the main town, Chora, Astypalea’s architecture narrates tales of a rich history. Narrow alleys wind through white-washed houses adorned with colourful accents, while traditional windmills stand as silent witnesses to the island’s past. The unhurried pace of life invites travellers to savour each moment, whether it’s indulging in local delicacies at seafront tavernas or discovering hidden coves along the rugged coastline. Astypalea’s magnetic allure lies in its ability to transport visitors to a world where tradition and natural beauty reign supreme.
