A beachfront gem honoured by many as one of the best hotels in the world, The Betsy anchors the quiet end of iconic Ocean Drive — and has one of the most exciting neighbourhoods in America as its backyard. Inside, you’ll discover everything you’d expect from a luxury boutique hotel — thoughtful amenities, extraordinary service, a storied chef guiding the kitchens— and some things you might not, like a beloved gathering place for arts and culture, a curated events program ranging from yoga classes to live music and the individual attention of a family-owned hotel.
The Betsy’s 130 luxury rooms and suites combine elegant design with the simple beauty of a tropical hideout. Finished with marble bathrooms, luxury furnishings, and walnut floors, as well as delights like artwork from the owner’s collection and your own library. Many offer extra space with balconies overlooking the Art Deco district and the hotel’s Atrium.
The Betsy’s history doubles as the story of Miami Beach — and a little bit of the country’s. Ocean Drive’s only surviving example of Florida-Georgian architecture, the hotel was built by Art Deco pioneer L. Murray Dixon in 1942; American troops were among its first guests. Some things have changed since then, though not the relaxed elegance regarded as the hotel’s hallmark.
Pops of color plus the style’s notable architectural lines, curves and fountains can be found throughout Miami Beach, but especially in the historic district. The styles of the 1920s and 1930s remain vibrant in the Art Deco Historic District in Miami Beach, home to the nation’s largest concentration of the sleek and bright architectural style. The district, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979, contains some 800 designated historic buildings, though some of them represent other modern architectural styles from different eras of Miami’s history. The Art Deco Historic District is located in Miami Beach between 5th Street and 23rd Street, along Ocean Drive (where The Betsy is located), Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue.
Learn more about Art Deco design during one of the daily walking tours offered by the Miami Design Preservation League. The tours, which run up to two hours, provide an introduction to Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern (MiMo) styles found in the historic district’s hotels, restaurants and other notable buildings.
