About Extremadura

Extremadura is a region of contrasts where you’ll be able to visit exceptionally incredible historical sites, enjoy a whole host of natural landscapes, and sample one of Spain’s most highly-prized cured hams.

Extremadura has three sites which have UNESCO World Heritage designation. In Mérida, its capital, visitors should not miss exploring its archaeological site, which every summer is used as the venue for a major theatre festival. The historic quarter of the city of Cáceres is also well worth a visit, as is the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe in the surrounding area.

Another of Extremadura’s attractions is its spectacular scenery, always a particular favourite with birdwatchers. Highlights include the Monfragüe National Park, the Jerte valley and the region’s characteristic wooded pastures. A visit to the Jerte valley is highly recommended in spring when the cherry trees are in blossom and the valleys are clothed in a blanket of white.

Day 1 – Day of Arrival

Arrive at Seville Airport, collect your hire car and drive to Llerena (131 km, 1 hr 30 min). Your first Hospederia (hotel) is in a marvellous nineteenth-century stately home in the charming town of Llerena, in the Badajoz province of Extremadura, Spain.

Overnight at Hospederia Mirador de Llerena.

Day 2-7 Llerena and Extremadura

Your Hospederia is a short walk to the central square of Leleran (Plaza Mayor) and a very good base from which to explore both the town on foot and the surrounding area and neighbouring Zafra by car. Merida with its spectacular Roman ruins is an hour’s drive north. The landscape around Llerena is one of rolling hills and vast plains of cereals and Dehesas, being enormous areas of cork oaks, holm oaks and olive trees with some sweet chestnuts. Some of the oaks are centuries old. This wild region is, of course, the home of the black pig which, for the final three months of its life – between October and December – is allowed to roam free and eat the holm oak acorns. The resultant ‘Jamon Iberico Puro Bellota’ is a unique and much sought-after ham that can retail at over £1,500 for a leg in the UK but is much more reasonably priced if purchased locally. The farming of black pigs is one of the main industries of the region which takes great pride in the production of these much sought-after hams.

Overnight at Hospederia Mirador de Llerena.

Day 8 – Transfer to Monfragüe National Park

It is a two-and-a-half-hour drive north from Llerena to the Hospederia Parque de Monfragüe. A relatively new building of traditional materials, the hotel is ideally located right outside the magnificent Monfragüe National Park. The park is known for its incredible natural scenery and landscapes with everything from lush forests, rolling hills, majestic mountains and quaint streams running off its two main rivers, the Tajo and the Tiétar. The park can be explored in a variety of ways with three self-guided walking routes graded by difficulty, two car routes through the park which include stops at its main viewpoints, and the option to explore on horseback, bikes and on guided tours on the weekend. While out in the park you’ll be able to see an incredible variety of wildlife, and the park is especially known for bird watching.

Overnight at the Hospederia Parque de Monfragüe.

Day 9-14 – Days at leisure

The Hospedeira de Monfrague is a perfect base from which to explore. Its position, 57 km from Caceres, 41 km from Trujillo and 42 km from Plasencia means you can stay in the wilds of the park yet be within an hour’s drive of three of the most beautiful towns in Spain over your five-day stay. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Caceres, with its blend of Roman, Moorish, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture; the remarkable castle of Trujillo; or, why not drive to Plasencia and savour some of the best food at the Parador, surrounded by impressive ancient walls.

Overnight at the Hospederia Parque de Monfragüe.

Day 15 – Day of Departure

The final day’s drive to Madrid Airport will take 2 hrs and 40 mins (269 km) where you will catch your return flight to the UK.
